Intro to Lead Climbing

Participants in the lead class learn to lead climb and lead belay in the gym. In this course we learn how to tie and dress a proper figure eight knot. The instructor guides participants through the techniques required for lead climbing, including: securely clipping the rope in the quickdraws, the dangers of incorrectly clipping in the rope, and the importance of rope awareness as a climber. After practice as the climber, we’ll begin the lead belay portion of the course. During belay training we teach how to properly use a belay device, maintain the proper amount of slack in the system and how to execute a soft catch.  If time allows, we will help students practice their newly learned techniques.
